MAITHILI

Maithili, the mother-tongue of the inhabitants of the entire Mithilanchal region besides its diasporic dissemination through other parts of the country and abroad, had its origin in the year 800 A.D. and its script is believed to have been invented around the year 1100 A.D. Since its inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India through the 92nd Amendment of the Constitution, Maithili has acquired the status of once of the constitutionally recognized languages of India. The literature of Maithili, as old as the language, is enormously rich and encompasses poets, writers and critics coming from the length and breadth of the country.
Apart from being one of the sweetest languages of the World in its spoken from, Maithili language and literature has, of late, emerged as a favourite choice as an optional subject for students preparing for Civil Services Examination conducted by the U.P.S.C and State Civil Services Commissions. Aspirants from even non-Maithili speaking areas of Bihar and various other states offer Maithili as one of the optional in the Main Examination of the Civil Services, as they find the subject extremely interesting, remarkably lucid and stunningly scoring, prepared with a proper planning and strategy. (More than half a dozen aspirants, with Maithili as an optional, have made it to the merit-list of successful candidates in the recently published results of the Civil Services Exams 2010).
Career opportunities are also available in the fields of Translation studies. The prestigious Sahitya Akademi of India offers job opportunities to those well-versed in Maithili in the areas of Translation. A post-graduate in Maithili with 55% and above marks is eligible for the post of Lecturer/Assistant professor in Colleges and the University Departments. Besides, students with a sense of devotion and commitment to Maithili can try their hands at creative writing and turn writers and poets thus combining livelihood with name and fame.
